Caste

An individual's rigidly inherited or ascribed status within society. People are careful to marry within their own caste and to avoid physical contact with members of lower castes because of the danger of perceived  'pollution'.

Discrimination based on a person's caste is prevalent mainly in parts of Asia (India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Japan) and Africa, and is most commonly associated with the Indian caste system.
