Civil Marriage

A wedding officiated by a government or civil official, which takes place without any religious affiliation and meets the legal requirements of the locale.

Some countries (for example, France, Spain and Italy) require that the couple are married in a civil ceremony in a location that is open to the public. If so required, the couple can afterwards be married in a church and have a religious ceremony performed by a member of the clergy.
