Companionate Marriage
An intimate, non-passionate type of marriage where sexual or physical desire is not an element. This type of marriage is often found when the passion has gone out of the relationship but a deep commitment and affection remain.
It may also be entered into by a couple who simply wish to enjoy the intimacy and commitment of a relationship, without it having a physical basis. In these forms of companionate marriages, the partners may agree to:
- Divorce by mutual consent if either wants a divorce.
- Not have children.
- Not be responsible for the financial welfare of one another.
A companionate marriage is often based on the spouses having mutual interests in their children and careers. For this type of marriage to be successful, both individuals need self-confidence and self-awareness. Without friendship, trust, commitment and shared values, a companionate marriage may be difficult to maintain.
