Kinship

A term that is used to describe a culturally defined relationship between individuals who are commonly thought of as having family ties. Kinship is based on descent, marriage and, occasionally, fictive relationships as well. Kinship is one of the most basic principles for organising individuals into social groups, roles, categories and genealogy.
