Levirate Marriage
A type of marriage in which a widow marries the brother of her deceased husband, keeping the dead man's children and wealth within his family. It also continues the bond between the husband's and wife's families.
Levirate marriage is most common in societies with a strong clan structure in which exogamous marriage (outside the clan), is forbidden, and that have polygyny and patrilineal descent.
