Patrilineal Descent

Also known as Agnatic Descent.

A system in which lineage is traced through the father and paternal ancestors. Both males and females inherit membership in a patrilineal family line, but only males pass it on to their descendents. With this pattern, people are related if they can trace descent through males to the same male ancestor.
