Shotgun Marriage

A marriage that is forced upon the participants, normally because the bride is pregnant. It is a misguided attempt to protect the family of the bride from embarrassment due to pregnancy out of wedlock. The term refers to the fact that the father of the pregnant daughter must resort to using coercive force to ensure that the man who impregnated her goes through with the wedding.
